New Spring Festival
The Parade Of Puppets In The Park
Like a holiday parade, but made by artists. The crowd spreads out on blankets across the Music Lawn, and one by one, giant puppets come down the garden path: towering birds and bears, river creatures and sky spirits, carried on poles and backpacks and worked by teams of puppeteers.
There is something about a giant puppet that lifts a crowd. Children gasp, grown-ups grin, strangers point and laugh together. Puppets are one of the oldest and most joyful art forms there is: big, gentle and a little bit magic, made by hand and carried by people working together. For one afternoon, the whole town looks up.
Each year has a new theme, announced in winter. Entries compete in six divisions, from Boulder High School students to artists from around the world, including makers from the large-scale art community behind festivals like Burning Man. The audience votes, and awards are given in every division.
Each puppet troupe can bring its own sound: a live band marching in its procession, or a musical soundtrack composed for its puppets. Drums, brass, strings or electronic scores move down the path with the giants, so every entry becomes a visual and musical performance as original as the puppets themselves.
Towering art, live music and a whole town on the lawn: a spectacle that could stand beside any festival in the country, and one that exists nowhere else.

Puppet Mornings: Tea And A Show
A gentle morning series in the Super Bloom Event Hall: hand-puppet and marionette shows for young children, with cocoa, herbal tea and treats from the cafe. Stories come from the garden itself: bees, seeds, creek creatures and the seasons, and kids can meet the puppets after each show. Some performers are parade artists, so families can watch the giants being made.
